God is One: To Know and Love Him, part 2

Personal Goal

Before new material, remember and reflect. Remember a key point from part 1 that we can love God because God first loved us. To help with that, reflect on 1 John 4:9-10:

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. [10] In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

There is Only One God

There is only one God, and God is therefore abolutely and utterly unique. This is the glory of God's oneness in a nutshell.

I am a sinner and there are many other sinners. You and I are creatures and there are many other creatures. The sun is brilliant, but there are many just like it or greater. There is only one universe, but the universe is a created thing and there are many created things. The universe is composed of matter and extended in physical space; and so are many other things. But there is only one God.

There is none like God. He is the only one of His kind. One of the Bible's clearest teachings is that there is only one true and living God. We are far too distracted with the trinkets and business of life. We do well to contemplate the glorious God revealed in the Bible. Nothing will lift us from the mundane and self-serving like this.

To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

1 Timothy 1:17

Which he will display at the proper time-he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

1 Timothy 6:15

The Glory of God's Oneness

There is one God.

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

1 Timothy 2:5

There are, therefore, no other gods.

Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel

and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:

"I am the first and I am the last;

besides me there is no god.

Isaiah 44:6

And nothing and nobody is comparable to God.

There is none like you, O LORD;

you are great, and your name is great in might.

Jeremiah 10:6

There is none holy like the LORD:

for there is none besides you;

there is no rock like our God.

1 Samuel 2:2

God alone, therefore, is worthy of supreme glory and honor.

I am the LORD; that is my name;

my glory I give to no other,

nor my praise to carved idols.

Isaiah 42:8

Indeed, it is an understatement to say that a being like this is great and deserves praise.

I will extol you, my God and King,

and bless your name forever and ever.

[2] Every day I will bless you

and praise your name forever and ever.

[3] Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,

and his greatness is unsearchable.

Psalm 145:1-3

Those created by God owe Him love, honor, and obedience. We ought to humbly and gladly reverance and serve Him.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [5] You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Believing God is one does not make us right with God. We must be united to Jesus by faith.

You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe, and shudder!

James 2:19

Only the One God can save sinners and reconcile us to Himself.

I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior.

Isaiah 43:11

Read all of Psalm 95 and contemplate the various reasons God alone is worthy of praise.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!

[7] For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture,

and the sheep of his hand.

Psalm 95:6-7

Praise the Lord who alone is One,

He has been merciful to sinners like me.

You have power we cannot fathom,

Wisdom we cannot penetrate,

Holiness we cannot imagine,

Yet in Christ, have set us free;

In Him our souls are won!

We praise You, Lord, who alone are One,

And we praise You for the grace of your Son.
